SPECIALTY STEEL, AESS AND MORE INNOVATIONS FOR 2011
In December, 2009 and, before that (back in 2008), as we closed out our year-long News items, we commented each time on the recessionary and challenging economy weighing down on the building industry. We’ve gotten past those doldrums now and are really optimistic this year-----and have reason to be. We are already at the front end of two current large-scale jobs that tell us that building and, with it, metal innovations are trending up. Good news for Metfab Metals and, we wish, for you. Retro-fitting a whole spectrum of buildings, public and private is something to watch----and work with-----in 2011 too.
Maybe we can help you with your special metals (and standard stuff too) this coming year! (For more detail, see www.metfabmetals.com) We can also supply all of our usual products and fabricate any unique metals products a job may require. Take advantage of our knowledge of SBA , LEED and other contract and technical documentation requirements for government, private & NGO jobs. If you need referrals to MBE and WBE contractors, we can help-------and have helped others to legitimately comply with these job essentials. Every day we provide supplies and services to satisfy your every type of outsource needs--and more. With always more “GREEN” buildings and jobs in the pipeline (certainly in our 2011 business plan and hopefully in yours), we’ll supply this information as quickly and surely as the products themselves. In increasing numbers, our customers need help with certification of “content” and “extraction” for LEED compliance purposes in appropriate form. Maybe we can help you?

Updates:
Javits Center, New York City ------ “Emergency Requests” and their fulfillment are two of the things we are known for and on which we have built our reputation for dependability. As we post this online, we have just picked up special steel from the mill in Pittsburgh and are working through the weekend to fabricate the support steel structure for a tower crane coming in at the same time by barge. We’ll deliver this Monday so this iconic building and its renewal can stay on schedule. Our part has all been done within a week from date of order. On time again!
World Trade Center, New York City, NY ------ We are starting the second phase of our work for this new landmark (after producing anchors to secure the granite in the walls of the pool memorials to our lost citizens). Go to the WTC website and see this beautiful work. www.panynj.gov/wtcprogress. This time, it’s the WTC4 tower that we are working on. Keep an eye on future news of this work here—and how we can do similar things for you!
New Jobs ------ Every day, we continue to ship common and specialty anchors for stone contractors (local and nationwide); curtainwall parts for various ongoing jobs and all the parts our general contractors and glass customers need on a daily basis.
!! As always, be safe through this Holiday Season !!

Metfab Finishes Assemblies for the “Javits Monorail”
Once again, we’ve worked closely with our customers to fulfill some of the unique needs that an iconic building retro-fit requires. We fabricated the assemblies needed to erect a “monorail” system to make feasible the removal and replacement of the exterior glass panels that create the entire outer skin of the Javits Center in NYC. The pictures below are of the Center as it originally looked--------and as it will look after the renovations are 100% complete.
The official Javits site reports the ongoing project as follows:
The Javits Center is implementing an extensive expansion and renovation project. The expansion phase consists of the construction of Javits Center North, a pre-engineered structure providing an additional 80,000 gross square feet of exhibition space.
Renovations to the main building will include the replacement of the roof, curtain wall, skylights, enlargement and reconfiguration of the main entrances along with replacement and upgrades of building systems. A green roof will be installed that will be the largest in the Northeast.
As you can readily see, the positioning of cranes would have been difficult indeed------------not to mention incredibly costly over the months they have been needed! So the architects and engineers ginned up an arcing set of assemblies to form into a monorail to move the detached old glass panels to waiting
cartage to remove them from the site. The same rails are then used to re-position the new and additional panels that create the new “GREEN” skin.
Metfab Metals was happy to fabricate and deliver the parts that made this system possible. Below is one recent truckload of these custom parts ready for the short run to NYC and delivery.

September/October, 2010 Newsletter
Last month, we warned here that, if you are working with government buildings and under their detailed contract requirements, you need experienced sub-contractors like us to avoid common pitfalls and consequent delays. Not only can we supply all of our usual products and fabricate any unique metals products a job may require, we KNOW the SBA and its processes and can even help you with LEED and other documentation requirements. If you need referrals to MBE and WBE contractors, we can help-------and have helped others to legitimately comply with these set-asides. Here at Metfab Metals every day we provide supplies and services to satisfy all manner of outsource needs, as well as contractual and statutory minimums---and more.
In recent months, we also reported in this space more of our new shop machinery and ongoing technology updates to serve our customers better, quicker and more accurately. Soon, we will move to full online production our new fourteen foot (14’) shear that adds to our capacity to fabricate on-site longer items (without production interruptions for outsourcing this step) both light-gauge and heavy-gauge metals. At the same time, we are bringing online in our shop a brand-NEW 125-TON Piranha ironworker. To better illustrate what this adds, beyond our existing 90-ton models, consider these facts: It has a 6” X 6” X 5/8” angle shearing capacity; a 1” X 16” plate shearing capacity and can ‘bite’ a 1-1/2” diameter hole in 1” plate steel. Now that’s a useful ironworker! Let us put this bad boy to work on your jobs!
At the same time now, and in increasing increments, our customers need our informed input and certification of “content” and “extraction” of materials for LEED compliance purposes. With always more “GREEN” buildings and jobs in the pipeline (and certainly in our future business and hopefully in yours), we have to supply this information in appropriate form as quickly and surely as the products themselves. As a service to our customers (present and future ones too), we have developed a regulation-compliant and informative document to properly report and LEED-certify our products. We are annexing a PDF of this proprietary form for your information and perhaps education on this very current topic. [Feel free to read this through and call us as to how we might help you too in this evolving, but technical, aspect of full job specification.]

Updates:
New Jobs ------We are about to start a set of Federal Government jobs in the Washington, DC, Baltimore and Virginia areas as part of the retro-fitting of existing buildings to comply with energy-efficiency and related goals. This is the same type of work we are completing now at the United Nations Headquarters in NYC-------------and we can do the same for you along with our heavier steel work.
World Trade Center, New York City, NY ------We are proud indeed that we can always truthfully state that our anchors are securing all this granite and form an essential part of the memorial tributes to our lost citizens and to honor those murdered Americans—and others---in that cowardly attack on 9/11.

Last month, we reported more of our new shop machinery and how we are closing on making it even easier for you to custom-design and order our anchors online---------at our ever-more user-friendly website. We are now getting on to a “go live” date for this new technology. This is just one more step we’ve taken over recent months---and years---to make our processes (from ordering to making and delivering on time) ever more customer-friendly and “fail-safe” as to errors. Call and talk with us as to how we can help you TODAY---and deliver what you may emergently need this week or next.
Anyone who doubted the re-building---and re-dedication----of Ground Zero, look at this picture:
We are proud indeed that we can always truthfully state that our anchors are securing all this granite and form an essential part of this tribute to our lost citizens on “9/11”.

Updates:
World Trade Center, New York City, NY ------ The memorial is now clad with granite hiding the full perimeter of our anchors that will long outlive all of us to honor those murdered Americans—and others---in that cowardly attack on 9/11.
Madison Square Garden, New York City, NY ------The custom access stairway we reported here last month is now done and ready for delivery and installation. Next we make specialty parts for this historic athletic venue. While we do a lot of work in the Big Apple, we can do the same things in any venue for you too.
United Nations Building, New York City, NY ---------- “Retro-cladding” is going forward now as we start the “aluminum” phase of our work on this East River international icon. Our aluminum work here is the type of thing we do for our “smaller” customers as well-------------and we can do the same for you along with our heavier steel work.
Jacob Javits Center, New York City, NY ------ This is another NYC retro-fit job and we are making unique parts from initial staging to standard curtainwall for aesthetics and energy-saving reasons. Here we are coordinating with our glass and GC partners to expedite this THIRD current ‘retro’ job in NYC alone--and we can do the same for you along with our heavier steel work.
New Jobs---------We are about to start another Federal Government job in Washington, DC as part of the spate of new buildings either replacing out-dated structures or retro-fitting (as reported above) still-suitable buildings to comply with energy-efficiency and other goals-------------and we can do the same for you along with our heavier steel work.. Read more on this in coming months.
But if you are working with government buildings and their arcane contract requirements-------------and need experienced subs, call us. We KNOW the SBA and other processes and can even help you with LEED and other documentation requirements. If you need referrals to MBE and WBE contractors, we have helped others to legitimately comply with these set-asides. We every day fulfill supplies and services to satisfy detailed contractual and statutory minimums---and more.

May/June, 2010 Newsletter
Last month, we updated you on some new shop machinery we installed to expedite our work for you and to execute even more functions in-house. Now we add another critical machine, though only a basic function is expedited with it A new automated radial drill will still make the same hole we made before. But, these can now be made faster, more accurately and while tapping them when plans call for such.
We are also happy to report that we are close to making it even easier for you to custom-design and order our anchors online at our ever-more user-friendly website. We hope to “go live” with this new technology before the Fall. Keep your eyes on this column for updates in coming weeks.
Let me explain how we are doing this: You know how you always order fabricated parts: you get drawings, fax them/mail them to us, call to make changes, adjust/finalize dimensions (often necessary), review steel sizes (other options), and finally hope that we are of one mind on what you really need. Or something like that!
Now, let me tell you that you will click to our anchor page and find our new, inter-active general drawings which you can mark up on screen and click to email your specific specs & designs to us. This is better for you, better for us------and FASTER! Also don’t hesitate to let us now if there are other ways we can make this even better for you. This is a work-in-process so we’ll be glad to have your input.

Updates:
Madison Square Garden, New York City, NY ------ We are starting this namesake job by building a custom staircase to facilitate access for the removal of stone panels which will be removed and later replaced after the refurbishment is done. Later this month, we commence making specialty parts for the next phase of our work on this historic athletic venue.
United Nations Building, New York City, NY ------ We are winding up one phase of our work on this total facelift of this East River iconic edifice, making it far more energy-efficient due to its “retro-cladding” in a most esthetically appealing way. This month we also start the “aluminum” phase of our work on this signature building. Soon we’ll have more to tell our aluminum and “smaller” customers about what we can do for you in this ‘second metal, after our steel work.
Jacob Javits Center, New York City, NY ------ We continue this retro-fit job on the West Side in the middle of Manhattan Island. We are making unique parts here-----from materials needed for initial staging to the full renovation of this existing NYC landmark to bring it into the 21st century aesthetically and energy- efficiently. Follow this job (all the while open for various trade shows---recently the annual Car Show) to see how we coordinate with our glass and contracting partners to meet the goals of this ‘retro’ job.
World Trade Center, New York City, NY ------ We are still making anchors for the granite cladding of the memorials that will recognize the murders of so many Americans—and others---in both former towers on that infamous 9/11. Our regular deliveries of parts for the new buildings will go on continuously into 2010 and beyond.
New Jobs ------ Next month, we’ll report on new jobs in other venues, including Washington, Virginia and Maryland, and New England too. Stay tuned!

March & April,
2010 Newsletter
Metfab Metals Tech Update: We are happy to announce that we have again updated our shop machinery with the addition of a brand-new, larger shear with a 14 foot cutting edge. This will not only accommodate the needs of our customers in heavier gauge steel sizes, but also can make more precise cuts on lighter gauge materials. Most importantly, it adds to the speed with which we can fulfill all the needs of all our customers.
We are passing to the end of the first quarter of 2010--------and into the second quarter! As we at Metfab Metals approached 2010, we were unsure how quickly----or not---our US economy would come out of the worst recession of our lifetimes------and how that would impact our own company’s economy. But, we see some hopeful signs for a good second half of this year.
In February, we reported our Project Updates for three of our major projects:
- Jacob Javits Center, New York City,
- World Trade Center, New York City,
- National Museum of American Jewish Heritage, Philadelphia, PA
Our work for the Jewish Heritage Museum in Philadelphia is now done, but we will be reporting progress on these other two jobs throughout 2010 and into 2011. What we are seeing is how we can help many of you with a growing aspect of our business---building cladding---fabricated metals for glass enclosures----or “skin”. We are inputting our experience and expertise into this planning with our customers (we are calling our system “Retro-Clad”). This is an energy-efficient and cost-effective concept which “wraps” an old building in a new aesthetic and energy-saving skin. Call me and ask me more.
Keep your eyes on this space in the coming months for reports on our work in this expanding area of metal fabrication. The federal government is tax-incentivizing energy efficiency for older buildings and as it is restoring that efficiency to its own store of buildings. This work creates opportunities for both our metal fabricating business and our allied contractors, improvising new glass enclosures with related innovations. Watch for more about our ideas on “Retro-Clad” systems for these upcoming jobs.
Project
Updates:
World Trade Center, New York City, NY------ We are most proud to make the anchors for the granite cladding of the memorials that will occupy the footprint of both former towers. We also daily deliver parts for both new buildings now underway and will do so into 2010 and beyond.
United Nations Building, New York City, NY------ We continue to make innovative parts for the renovation and re-cladding of this existing NYC landmark to bring it into 21st century efficiency and beyond. As we edge toward the timely completion of this contract, this opportunity has shown how we coordinate with our glass partners to meet the energy goals of this ‘retro’ job. We have made our contribution to “value-engineering” to make this transition (while occupied and in full active use) a reality, esthetically pleasing and energy-efficient.
Jacob Javits Center, New York City, NY------ We have begun to make deliveries of the first parts needed for this restoration job. We will be working on a myriad of diverse fabrications for this job into the summer and beyond.
